Welcome to Haelrahv!
This is a sci-fi/fantasy-mix Roleplaying Environment, bla bla bla... Bah! Go read the official website. All the info is there. You should also read the message forum as well as other player websites to get some idea of this game.
I'm so confused
Hehe. Don't worry, so was I. First, some basic commands. You can type HELP
to get a list of files written up by the GMs to make your arrival in Haelrahv a
little less confusing. (HELP PROFESSION is something you should look at in case you'd like to get a clearer picture of your chosen profession and what you need to train.) Type COMMAND to see what kind of commands/verbs are available to you. Also, you can type LOOK [your name] to peek at yourself.
Typing EXP and INFO will pull up some crucial information about your character.
Oh My God! I just started and I
don't know where I am!!!
Have no fear! Here are two map sites you can use to figure out where you are and
where to go! FYI, if you haven't moved from the spot you arrived at, you are
currently located in the Cloud Court in Llanfair.

What's this Personal Imaging
Center I need to visit?
The Personal Imaging Center is a place where you store your DNA, so that you
can be RESTOREd from death. It's located in the Hospital which is north,
southwest from Cloud Court (CC). Okay, since this is important: Once you're at
the hospital, type GO DOOR, GO ARCHWAY, GO DOOR, GO CURTAIN and wait.
There are two ways you can get alive. One, is to have a trained Medic
cardio-stimulate you alive. (So be nice to your local medic!) The other way is
to RESTORE yourself by having the hospital regenerate you from your last saved
DNA sample. As a newbie, once you get your DNA sample taken, you won't lose
experience from a RESTORE. After you have reached 4th level, you will lose the
experience you gained since your last DNA sample. For example, if you last saved
your DNA at 150,000 EXP and two days later, you gained 156,000 EXP but died,
when you RESTORE yourself, you'll be back at 150,000 EXP. So you should save
often if you're not willing to sacrifice a lot of experience.
What now?
Personally, the first thing I'd do is getting to know people. :) But
sometimes the people don't have the time to spare to get to know you. Don't be
discouraged! People aren't unfriendly! They're just busy for the moment. It
helps to be polite and NOT pester them all the time.
Okay, really... What now??
You train! Using EXP and INFO, you can see what skills and stats you
currently have. Using the Llanfair map I have already directed you to via map
links, you should start locating trainers and places where you can raise your
stats and skills. Some of the trainers are wandering NPCs, so you may have to
run all over Llanfair looking for them. As for what skills you should train, DO
NOT feel the need to train all your skills that are listed under your
profession. This is why I recommend talking to other players and reading the
message boards. Train what you feel you'll need and don't worry about having
spare points. You can add them on later.
Umm, I found the trainers, what
now?
Type TRAINER to see what skills or stats you can raise. Then type RAISE or
TRAIN [skill/stat]. Next, type the number of times you want to raise the
skill/stat (e.g. type: 2). Finally, type YES when you are sure you want to raise
your skill/stat by that amount.
I noticed I have a communicator
Type LOOK MY COMM and READ MY COMM. You will notice information about your
communicator and instructions for its use. This allows you to speak to other
people via radio channels. Just TRANSMIT [your message] to speak publically to
other people. Remember the channels are considered In-Character (IC) channels,
so try to refrain from speaking Out-Of-Character (OOC).
Remember that communicators can become damaged after extensive use and will
require a technician's skilled hands to repair it. You'll know your comm is
starting to go when it crackles.
So, how do I level up?
Currently, the way Beta Haelrahv is set up is that you gain general
experience points rather than specific skill-practised experience points.
Basically, if you forage, hunt, or do other experience-earning activities, it
will all go to one general experience pool. Type EXP. "Experience:" shows how
much exp you've earned. "Next level:" tells you how much experience points you
need before you can level up.
I believe (but don't quote me on this) that in the live version, there may be
plans to make it possible for you to raise certain skills by actually doing
skill-related activities. So if you kill stuff with your gun, you could gain
experience to raise your pulse weapon skill. I think that there will still be a
general experience pool as well. We can find out later!
Congratulations! You've gotten through the basics! Next you will want to gain experience and make money...No? What do you mean there are other things just as important??? Bah! Newbies... *grumble*
Recommended Experience Gain For the Young
I go into more detail about gaining experience in another page, which you can read about. But here are my recommendations for the new arrivals. For those just starting, I PERSONALLY recommend doing just one of two things:
Foraging
Foraging is one of the simplest and no-risk ways to gain experience AND earn some money.
If you're interested in making money, I do not recommend doing anything more
than foraging. Refining is iffy in my opinion. You can do it if you wish, it
gives you something else to do besides foraging, and you make a little bit extra
cash.
Ecology helps you find more things to forage. Spending a little bit of your
skill points to pump into ecology will help. But if you don't plan on spending
your whole life as a forager, you may want to consider carefully how much (if
any) you want to train in ecology. There may be other methods to gain experience
with very little (if any) money in the beginning, but will be more useful and
profitable (and a more suitable RP) for you on a long-term basis.
Making potions is a waste of time for the young if experience gain AND
money-making is your only motive. If it's in your character's RP personality to
make potions, by all means do so. While potion making is a different activity to
break the mind numbing boredom of foraging, you will definitely make more money
foraging than you will potion-making. The time it takes for you to gather your
ingredients, refine them AND make them into potions, you could have foraged more
commodities. While foraging can take time to gather the materials, you will have
a lot more options of what to forage as opposed to foraging for specific
alchemical ingredients.
When you are more skilled and able to forage noticeably more units per round,
then it will probably be worthwhile to make potions. ;)
VERY Helpful tip: When you forage for an item, you don't have to put the
item away in your backpack right away. With the item in one hand, keep foraging
for the same item. You will AUTOMATICALLY bundle the additional units with your
item. You can have up to 50 units in the bundle.
e.g.
>forage shoran jewel
You forage around a bit and find a shoran jewel.
Roundtime: 14 sec.
(Then without putting your shoran jewel away....)
>forage shoran jewel
You forage around a bit and find a shoran jewel.
You now have 2 units of jewel.
(Thanks for reminding me about the tip, Cheyenna Michelle!)
Hunting
Hunting is another recommended experience gain method for the young and you
get to kill things. WHEE! New arrivals should forgo armor at this time and train
their defense and weapon of choice. Then you can go blast the crap out of
critters. Beginner hunters should start by killing the asapi and eosheai located
in the abandoned park. (Look at the maps!)
To gain the best value for the items you foraged or mined, you should sell your items through a broker (level 5+ bureaucrat) and keeping an eye on commodity prices.
Keeping your foraged items in a separate container is advisable but not necessary. It just lessens the confusion in case you want to keep some potions for yourself. Brokering will sell everything in bulk. To broker, hold in your right hand the container full of items you wish to sell (such as herbs, gems and potions). Then, BROKER WITH [Broker's Name].
The broker keeps none of your money, so you don't have to worry about being cheated. However, you should understand the brokering system, because you won't always get the best value for your items if you don't know what to look for. You can learn more about brokering here.
Well, it happens. Do not panic. There are two things you can do at this point:
When you are alive again, you will notice some sort of death penalty. This reduces all your skills by a percentage. Don't panic! Just start working on gaining experience and when you earn enough experience, your penalty will go away.
If you type EXP or INFO, you'll notice a "Reallocations left" section. Reallocation is basically your chance to start over without sacrificing what you've gained so far. Unlike other games where starting over means starting as new, this allows you to keep your experience gained, money and items you've accumulated.
I recommend that you don't reallocate for at least a month (Unless you want to change professions.) Make all the mistakes you can possibly make in training, and when you understand the game and the skills better, reallocate later. Make the most of your reallocates!
